這部《簡(jiǎn)明英國(guó)文學(xué)史》教材是應(yīng)外語(yǔ)教學(xué)與研究出版社之邀，為廣大青年學(xué)子，特別是那些需要參加外國(guó)文學(xué)類(lèi)考試的學(xué)生編寫(xiě)的。通觀目前國(guó)內(nèi)書(shū)市上已有的各種英國(guó)文學(xué)史、文學(xué)選讀及文學(xué)詞典，用英文寫(xiě)的簡(jiǎn)明版英國(guó)文學(xué)史并不多見(jiàn)，最具代表性的要算河南大學(xué)劉炳善教授于1981年出版的那一部。劉炳善教授是業(yè)內(nèi)非常受尊敬的老先生，治學(xué)嚴(yán)謹(jǐn)，他編寫(xiě)的文學(xué)史直到今天在材料翔實(shí)、評(píng)介簡(jiǎn)明和體例清晰方面仍然是值得稱(chēng)道的。然而，畢竟二十多年過(guò)去了。隨著文學(xué)創(chuàng)作的發(fā)展和新文學(xué)理論的出現(xiàn)，國(guó)際上對(duì)文學(xué)作品和作家的研討都有了創(chuàng)新，加之我國(guó)改革開(kāi)放后吸收了不少過(guò)去被我們忽視，甚至排斥的批評(píng)觀念和理論，這樣，編寫(xiě)一部新的《簡(jiǎn)明英國(guó)文學(xué)史》的任務(wù)就被提到了日程上來(lái)。編者在受命后，參照了過(guò)去的一些教材，擬訂了自己的編寫(xiě)和選材原則。經(jīng)過(guò)了近兩年的努力，編者在日常繁忙的教學(xué)和科研任務(wù)中見(jiàn)縫插針，終于完成了這項(xiàng)有意義的工作。在這部教材即將出版并投入使用之際，我們想就編寫(xiě)的想法和使用方法做一些介紹，僅供讀者參考。
