在閱讀文章時，同學們有時會看到這樣一種句子現象，句子中沒有關系詞，卻出現了兩個不是并列關系的謂語動詞。如：I like the music for the reason he dislikes it. 在這個句子中， he dislikes it這是一個定語從句，這個句子實際省略了定語從句的關系詞that或是for which。還原成標準的定語從句應該為I like the music for the reason that/for which he dislikes it. 下面我們來說一下關系詞可以省略的幾種情況。

一、關系代詞在定語從句中作賓語時可以省略。當關系代詞who, whom, which和that在定語從句中用作動詞賓語或介詞位于句末時的介詞賓語時，可以省略。如：

Is there anything (that) you wanted? (that作賓語)

Who is the man (that / who / whom) you were talking to?  (that / who / whom作賓語)

二、關系代詞在定語從句中作表語時可以省略。如：

China is not the country (that) it was. (that作表語)

三、關系代詞在定語從句中作賓補時可以省略。如：

I’m not the madman (that) you thought me. (that作賓語補語)

四、關系副詞在定語從句中作狀語時可以省略，有三種情況。

1、省略when的情況。用作時間狀語的關系副詞when通常不能省略，但用于day, year, time，moment等少數幾個詞后時可以省略，也可換成that。如：

That was the year (that) I first went abroad.

I’ll never forget the day (that) we met.

2、省略where的情況。用作地點狀語的關系副詞where通常不能省略，但用于place, somewhere, anywhere, everywhere, nowhere少數幾個詞后時可以省略, 也可換成that。如：

This is the place (where) they met yesterday.

Have you somewhere (that) I can lie down for an hour?

3、省略why的情況。關系副詞why通常只用于the reason后引導定語從句，且通常可換成that或for which，均可省略。如：

That’s the reason (why/ for which/ that) he came.

Give me one reason (why) we should help you.

考研英語長難句中定語從句的關系詞省略的情況只適用于限定性定語從句，非限定性定語從句不可以省略關系詞。
