鄭和(1371－1433)是中國也是世界歷史上的偉大航海家，是世界航海史上地理大發現的先驅。從明永樂三年到宣德八年(1405－1433)的28年間，鄭和奉使七下西洋(鄭和航海時代的東西洋分界以帽山為準，帽山以西的大海，是為西洋；帽山以東的大海，則屬東洋范圍。概言之，當時的西洋即今印度洋)。
鄭和下西洋是明代初年的盛事，是中國走向世界的壯舉。鄭和下西洋的偉大事業，是人類文明史上第一次大規模的遠航。其航海規模之大，持續時間之長，統率部眾之多，航海里程之遠，航海技術之先進，在當時是舉世無雙的。
鄭和是中國人民的和平友好的使者。在28年的時間里，鄭和統率“舟師 ”，涉滄溟十萬余里，歷訪東南亞、南亞、西亞和東非的30多個國家和地區，送去了中國人民對受訪國深厚的友好情誼，帶回了亞非各國人民對中國的親切感情；鄭和下西洋，增進了中外友好交往，拓展了海上絲綢(瓷)之路，擴大了亞非國家的海上交通和貿易往來，加強了文化交流和物種交流，推動了世界文明的進程，為人類和平發展事業作出了重大貢獻。
鄭和下西洋這一偉大的歷史性事件，依托的是明初國家的統一強盛，依托的是明初整個社會經濟的發展、科學技術的進步。同時，鄭和下西洋對科學技術和經濟的發展，對生產力的推動，也具有十分深遠的意義。
